Case Study of Sequoia Yoga
If we can define and summarise this entire process in words, it would be:
The Challenge
Sequoia Yoga came to BrightNest Studios with a problem most wellness brands know well: their email list was healthy on paper but flat in practice. Open rates were already respectable, but emails were being treated as admin, class reminders, schedule changes, the occasional promo, rather than something students actually looked forward to. Sequoia Yoga didn't just want a better open rate. They wanted their emails to feel like an extension of the studio itself: calm, intentional, and human. The challenge was turning a functional inbox habit into something closer to a ritual.
The Approach
We built a storytelling-first email strategy rooted in rhythm, reflection, and real results, rather than the usual promotional cadence. Instead of treating every email as a standalone push for bookings, we designed a themed monthly series, with each month built around a mindful concept such as Momentum, Presence, or Rituals. Practical studio updates were woven into that emotional thread, so a class schedule change and a moment of reflection could sit in the same email without feeling disjointed.
Subject lines were rewritten as conversation starters rather than routine announcements. Lines like "Keep It Moving: The Ritual of Momentum Starts on the Mat" or "Doing Good Looks Good on You" were designed to earn a second glance in a crowded inbox, not just describe what was inside. We also used open-time data to refine send scheduling, timing emails to land during the quiet windows after a class or before the workday, when a student was more likely to actually read rather than skim and archive. Every call to action was softened into an invitation rather than a demand: book your next flow, read the reflection, pause and breathe, language built to match the tone of the studio itself.
The Results
The shift in approach showed up quickly in the numbers. Sequoia Yoga's campaigns reached a 52% average open rate, roughly 20% above the wellness industry average, and click-through rates held at 2.7%, with spikes up to 4% on reward-based emails. Just as telling were the 30 to 40 clicks landing on the best-performing sections of each email, a sign of students genuinely engaging with the content rather than opening and moving on.
More than the metrics, though, the emails changed how students related to the brand between visits. They stopped reading as admin and started functioning as small check-ins, a reminder to stay grounded and present, and a nudge that they were part of something bigger than a single class booking. Sequoia Yoga proved that when marketing meets mindfulness, engagement stops feeling like a metric to chase and starts happening on its own.
